John 19:30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished.” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Jesus died. Taken at face value, from strictly human understanding, this seems like the end of the story.
Jesus Himself said, “It is finished.” But what… what was finished? Jesus atonement on our behalf that offers us the free gift of salvation.
John tells us that Jesus gave up His spirit. His life was not taken from Him, He gave it willingly, just as He had prophesied that He would:
John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
John 10:15 Even as the Father knows Me, so I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.
John 10:17 Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I received this command from My Father.”
Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Jesus was crucified. Jesus died. “It is finished” – but that’s not the end of this story, because “Sunday’s comin’.”
